Happy New Year! Well, at least for us, it’s the beginning of a new year. The Grant Awards Celebration is a recent memory, contracts have been signed with all our recipients, and initial checks have been issued. Our fiscal year is drawing to a close and a new year begins on July 1st.
I couldn’t be more excited or more optimistic about the year ahead. Last week we had our first meeting of the new Board of Directors and elected Officers for the 2023-2024 season. Please join me in welcoming our new Board Members and thanking the members who rotated off the Board. We are developing a healthy pipeline of committee members and leaders who encourage others to lead – the lifeblood of any volunteer-led nonprofit. But there is always room for more.
If you haven’t volunteered for a committee and are thinking about it, now is the time to join. In June-July we are formulating committees so we can develop plans in the summer and hit the ground running in the fall. If you expressed an interest in a committee on your profile in the Member Portal, you will be hearing from Committee Chairs soon. If you haven’t expressed interest but would like to learn more, please write us at info@impact100martin.org and we will reach out to you to explore your areas of interest. It’s a great way to meet amazing women who care about our community and I can say I have made lifelong friends as a result of volunteering. Plus, YES is more fun!
Please take a few minutes to read this newsletter, even if you are away for the summer. You will notice a new monthly feature “See Your Impact” where you’ll read updates on the impact of our grants. We’re also planning more “See Your Impact” events this year, allowing members to visit our nonprofits in-person and see the way we are changing lives in Martin County. First and foremost, we are a grants-making organization and we want to cultivate stronger year-round relationships between our members and local nonprofits. More on that to follow.
If you’re in town, we have fun summertime events including Happy Hours, a casual golf league and our ever-popular Book Club. We hope you will join us!

It’s always exciting to share the progress of projects funded by your membership in Impact100 Martin! Below are photos of a recent planting at Palm Cove Yacht and Golf Club in Palm City completed by over 30 volunteers assisting with the buffered shoreline project at The Ocean Research & Conservation Association (ORCA). ORCA was a 2022 Merit Award Recipient and has completed the final planting as part of this funded project. Thank you to ORCA and volunteers who are striving to protect our local environment!

We opened the doors of Patty Downing Interiors in 1992. While we have evolved over the years, we have always been a creative, supportive, loving firm.
We have always strived to make our clients feel comfortable with the design process. I always say, if l can get into your head, I can make it happen; a "no" is as informative as a "yes", both give me direction. We are an experienced, easy to work with firm that yields truly beautiful homes. But what is special about PDI is our nurturing atmosphere. Glenda, my office manager has been with me for 30 years and we, as a team, feel it is essential that everyone at PDI feels they belong. We are always there, whether pitching in on jobs, reaching out for personal needs and supporting their personal charities. As the song says "We are Family". Our general territory ranges from Vero Beach to West Palm Beach, but it is not unusual for us to work with clients who have homes in various parts of the country.
We have a great team of subs, not only is their work impeccable but so is the way they treat our clients.
I feel blessed with everyone at PDI, three incredibly talented designers,
Katie Astras, Missy Mortell and Marguerite Madden. Our administrative staff is the best, Glenda is top of the chart and oversees everything. Nicki, Bailey and Caroline all keep our office running smoothly.
After 30 years we have acquired a great level of expertise, but most importantly we have never lost sight of the importance of relationship with clients, vendors, our PDI family and community. That allows us to deliver excellent interior design.
Come join us for happy hour and meet up with old and new friends.
Impact100 Martin members and guests - all are welcome.
We would like to have an idea who is attending, so if you could sign up that would be very helpful!
This is a cash bar event.
Hope to see you there! Jill Preston and Susan Melians
P.S. Sign up early and mark your calendar for July 20 & Aug 24 locations TBD

Kentucky, 1850. An enslaved groom named Jarret and a bay foal forge a bond of understanding that will carry the horse to record-setting victories across the South. When the nation erupts in civil war, an itinerant young artist who has made his name on paintings of the racehorse takes up arms for the Union. On a perilous night, he reunites with the stallion and his groom, very far from the glamor of any racetrack. New York City, 1954. Martha Jackson, a gallery owner celebrated for taking risks on edgy contemporary painters, becomes obsessed with a nineteenth-century equestrian oil painting of mysterious provenance. Washington, DC, 2019. Jess, a Smithsonian scientist from Australia, and Theo, a Nigerian-American art historian, find themselves unexpectedly connected through their shared interest in the horse—one studying the stallion’s bones for clues to his power and endurance, the other uncovering the lost history of the unsung Black horsemen who were critical to his racing success. Based on the remarkable true story of the record-breaking thoroughbred Lexington, HORSE is a novel of art and science, love and obsession, and our unfinished reckoning with racism.
If you want to meet new members with the shared interest of reading and discuss the book HORSE by Geraldine Books. Join our moderators Sue Whittington and Jill Preston on August 7th for our discussion. While this will be an informal gathering, we ask that you please read the book if you plan to attend. This will be held in a private home in the Summerfield community - the address will be sent to all who R.S.V.P. by August 4, 2023.
